NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.
"The choice came down to our family's safety and the imperative to directing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a famous family.
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
