Tracking the Venezuela-linked Oil Tanker 'Pursued' by American Maritime Authorities

We are verifying images and video circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to verify the site of where the images originated was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
