The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the popular program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response

Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
