The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
