The Legendary Williams, Receives Special Entry for First Melbourne Major in Five Years.

A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has been so significant to my career."

By the Numbers

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, surpassing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

Recent Personal Milestone

In the final days of December, Williams married Denmark-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
