Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Objections from Egypt and Iran

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle amid next summer’s World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, despite Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside External Festivities

Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G match featuring Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA will permit rainbow flags to be brought into the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.

Cultural Background Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Symbols

Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums on matchdays. Although it prohibits political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.

  • The Pride Match concept was devised to showcase Seattle’s longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest is underway to produce artwork celebrating the occasion.
  • Organizers are committed to making sure every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest throughout the tournament.

The region hosts a significant most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement added.
