Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Uninterrupted Crude Oil Shipments to India in Snub of American Demands

In a clear message to the United States, President Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “uninterrupted” deliveries of energy resources to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “immune to external pressure.”

A Statement Directed at the West

The statement, delivered Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at Washington, who have tried to urge New Delhi into reducing its close relations with Moscow. The context comes after previous Washington's moves, including the introduction of tariffs targeting New Delhi due to its acquisition of Russian oil.

“Russia is a reliable source of oil and gas and all needed for the development of India’s economy,” Putin said. “We are ready to persist in ensuring the uninterrupted supply of fuel for the booming Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, while not naming energy specifically, reinforced the sentiment by saying that “secure fuel supplies has been a strong and important cornerstone of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Challenging US Interference

Prior to the meeting, during a media interview, Putin had criticized US interference regarding India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, then why can't India claim the equivalent access?”

The visit marked his first trip to India after the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a clear attempt to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the men remained intact.

An Unusual Reception

Taking an unusual gesture, the Indian PM personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. The two embraced warmly as longtime companions before enjoying a one-on-one meal the night before the summit.

Modi later described India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and said it was “based on shared respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Bilateral Partnerships

The meeting produced a number of key agreements in the fields of defence and financial collaboration. One significant result was the completion of an strategic roadmap that runs to 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to $100bn annually by the target year.

The leaders also pledged to restructure their military partnership. While Russia remains India's primary exporter of defence equipment, the volume has declined in recent years as India works to widen its sources.

The joint statement stressed an agreement on the joint production of advanced defence platforms, though specific mention of systems like the Sukhoi Su-57 were omitted.

Overall, both nations reiterated that in the “present intricate, difficult, and volatile geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership continue to be strong to foreign influence.”
