President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that he has asked the loved ones of a National Guard member killed last week to visit the White House.
He added that he spoke to her family and they were “deeply grieving”.
Soldier Beckstrom, twenty years old, was fatally shot in a violent incident on Wednesday in DC.
Her colleague, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Memorials across the state have been held in their remembrance.
The commander-in-chief stated he’s proposed a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both soldiers of the West Virginia Guard.
“I told them: ‘When you’re able, because that’s a difficult moment, visit the White House. We’re going to honor her,” Trump addressed reporters. “And similarly with him, whether he recovers or not.”
Attendees gathered over the weekend at Webster County high school in the state to pay respects to Beckstrom.
Both the soldiers had been fulfilling duties with the military unit as part of the president’s federal initiative to assist policing efforts in DC.
“Sarah was the individual that instructors desired. She behaved with inner fortitude, a bright grin and a upbeat demeanor that inspired people around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the head of her previous school, stated to the Associated Press. “She was caring, compassionate and always ready to assist people.”
Funeral details for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Officials have accused a 29-year-old individual from Afghanistan with one count of murder and two counts of violent assault while carrying a weapon.
The incident caused the Trump administration to halt refugee claims and cease issuing entry permits to owners of travel documents.
Wolfe, a resident of Martinsburg, enlisted in February 2019 and is a graduate of his local high school, per the AP.
He is still undergoing care and is “in a critical fight”, West Virginia governor Morrisey stated on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
Attorney general Pam Bondi told Fox News Sunday that she also intended to visit his relatives.
Beckstrom, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County high school in June 2023 and enlisted soon after, serving as a law enforcement officer with honor, per the West Virginia National Guard.
“She had a lot of compassion and she certainly had bravery,” the governor told the crowd at the memorial. “Though her life lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to be remembered always.”
