New York Introduces Reporting Tool for Residents to Submit ICE Footage Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens

The state AG has rolled out a fresh online portal encouraging locals to share visual evidence of ICE operations across New York. This step follows a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking widespread protests.

US Citizens Arrested During Enforcement Action

A US congressman revealed during a news conference that four citizens were taken into custody and kept for "nearly 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Demonstrations occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Every New Yorker is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general stated in a statement.

"If you witnessed and documented federal operations during the raid, I encourage you to provide that evidence with my office. We are dedicated to reviewing these accounts and investigating any violations of law."

The platform provides fields to send images and video footage of the incident, plus a section to specify location information. When submitting, users must mark a checkbox that states that "the attorney general could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or official statement."

Information about the Chinatown Raid

The enforcement action, which observers say featured over fifty ICE personnel, took place in a well-known area of the city where fake products and additional items are commonly traded en masse – frequently to visitors.

Footage of the incident reveal multiple masked and armed officers zip-tying and detaining a man, and forcing aside onlookers. Masses of residents trailed the personnel through the streets. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the urban roads.

Official Reactions

At a midweek briefing featuring the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be detained for no reason." He said the persons were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman stated. "This is a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is merely a pretext to incite violence for this administration to utilize the troops to prevent conflict that they have created."

Widespread Condemnation

Outrage over the immigration operation rapidly grew – all three NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the operation, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Yet again, the current administration selects authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, rather than security. It must stop," a political candidate wrote.

The city's advocacy organizations expressed outrage also.

"Immigration agents descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and riot gear to focus on small merchants attempting to earn income. This action had no relation to public safety and focused completely on intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the head of a rights organization.

Agency Rules

Agency rules bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has said it will not take into custody citizens. However, independent reporting has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been held against their will by federal agents since the beginning of the existing leadership.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been becoming more common in NY and across the US lately.

An October operation in the city center was the first known raid on an housing center of the existing leadership. Demonstrations targeting federal operations are commonplace along with accusations of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Most recently, a letter filed by advocacy organizations claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
