New Year's Partygoers Urged to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Expected Across the UK

Forecasters have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are forecast to be low, so extra layers essential, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather was likely to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
