The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.
Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."
He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
