Individuals from across the political aisle and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn former President Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial amount.
The response to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
“What a appalling and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his political party to defend the statements.
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of another individual.
Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
