The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
