Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his intention to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to support Cuomo in areas where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to energize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor remarked.

The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has made headlines worldwide and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a heated mayoral debate.
