Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past worked in armed forces or intelligence positions.
"Like us, you all took an vow to safeguard and defend this constitution," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that violate the statutes or our founding principles."
The recorded statement reportedly prompt a furious reply from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a joint statement condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no place in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our country with tremendous loyalty and honor. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical online messages and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.
The officials who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this nation and made an pledge to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president considers it punishable by death for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their backs as they carry out their oath to the constitution and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "Every American must come together and censure the former president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for principled stance."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and posted on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the execution of government members."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of Congress advising military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and decide all that."
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the representative stated. "There are sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the executive's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
