The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections are over.
"Absolutely, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom remarked when asked about seriously considering a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
Newsom's current term as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent critic of the Trump administration, employing his digital presence and pushing a initiative that would boost the party's House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has made him a target from critics.
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a recent appearance on a major news network. Duffy revealed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested revoking the power to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," he declared, in the wake of a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that led to loss of life and casualties.
His administration pointed out that the national authorities had approved the driver's employment repeatedly, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously indicated he was blocking $40 million from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for truck drivers.
"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," his administration retorted in a last month's comment countering the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
A recently conducted study revealed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters said that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has grown to an average of a third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an average of more than 40% to current figures.
Some time ago, Newsom stated while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.
He noted his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The idea that a individual who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
