Barry Manilow has revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer of the lung and will undergo an operation.
The 82-year-old singer, famous for his series of upbeat chart-toppers from "Copacabana" has made him one of pop music’s cherished showmen, will have surgery to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to fight off the disease, which is in its early stages.
“For those who have been following, I recently went through six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a relapse of another five weeks.
“Although I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my attentive medical team requested an MRI just to make sure that all was clear.
“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s sheer fortune (and a fantastic physician) that it was found so early.”
He has delayed a number of upcoming shows, but indicated he would be back on stage by the February holiday for his long-running concert series at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.
He continued: “The physicians do not believe it has traveled and I’m undergoing further tests to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just rest and recuperation and I Love Lucy reruns.
“I’m eagerly awaiting until I come back to my home away from home for our Vegas run for our special weekend performances.”
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a concert series in Nevada. The singer has been in the limelight and revealed he is gay in 2017, after wedding his longtime partner and manager confidentially in 2014.
The duo were in a clandestine relationship for more than 35 years. Recently, Manilow reflected on how crucial his partner had been to him during his explosion in popularity in the 1970s.
“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, going back to an vacant room, you can land in a lot of problems if you, you know, you’re on your own repeatedly,” he said.
“But I met Garry right around when it was taking off. And I no longer had to go back to those empty hotel rooms. I had a person to be vulnerable with or to celebrate with.
“I desire that young people don’t have to go back to those suites by themselves, because you get yourself in trouble. I never did. But it was very solitary until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
